About Vet

Aty Puentes DVM, MSc, CVA Dr. Aty Puentes was born in Bogota, Colombia. In 2000, she received her veterinary degree from the National University of Colombia. In 2003 she joined the Smithsonian Institution as a veterinary reproductive researcher in Virginia. In 2009 she received her Master of Science degree in Natural Resources and Wildlife Management from the University of Connecticut.

In 2010 she completed the testing required for her to obtain her license as a small animal veterinarian in the United States.

Dr. Puentes moved to Florida to complete her small animal acupuncture certification though the Chi Institute in Gainesville. She moved back to Virginia in 2017

She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical association and the World association of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. She has a very strong interest in pain management, geriatric medicine and surgery.

Dr Puentes is an avid traveler and enjoys pottery and biking. She currently lives with her cat Milagro, her dog Keyka.

Although our outcome was eventually very sad, Dr. Puentes was very helpful on a day when I simply could not find any local emergency care for our cat, Harry. She affirmed that he was in need of such care and called a local animal hospital to advocate for us, which allowed us to be seen that night. Harry very sadly had to be put down the next night, but I am grateful that Dr. Puentes helped to shepherd us through some difficult hours that day.

Super friendly, caring, knowledgeable, attentive, and efficient! Dr Aty identified the issue via FaceTime and prescribed the medications that will hopefully get my lil baby feelin better while we wait for our walk-in vet appt that’s scheduled in two weeks (the soonest old dominion animal hospital had availability)
