Cat health symptoms

Variation in meowing sounds is normal in cats, but when meowing becomes hoarse or crackly it is considered abnormal. This change in the vocal sound can be a symptom of many conditions that range from mild to life-threatening. 

The cornea is the transparent cover over the front of the eye. When inflamed, it swells with fluid (edema), and becomes cloudy. Corneal edema may appear as a hazy, blue, or milky opacity covering the surface of the colored part of the eye.

Collapse is the inability to maintain a normal, standing posture, and is a rare symptom in cats. Cat owners may see their cat suddenly fall or intentionally lie down, then be unable to stand up.

Constipation is straining to defecate when the colon is full. Constipation is not to be confused with diarrhea which may cause straining to defecate when the colon is empty and irritated.

Cats cough in the same way and for many of the same reasons as humans. Anything causing irritation, inflammation, or obstruction of the respiratory tract can cause coughing.

Cracked, loose, or discolored teeth in cats are abnormal and indicate underlying conditions that may be causing pain.

Crossed eyes (strabismus) is a common symptom in cats where one or both eyes have abnormal, persistent positioning. Strabismus can be congenital and is most often seen in Siamese, Himalayan, and flame point Persian breeds.

Skin lumps occurring within or near the surface of the skin are called cutaneous masses.
