Mastering Vetster’s Versatile Prescribing Tools on VetsterRx

The ability to prescribe and help pet owners find solutions to their pet’s ailment is an important part of the Vetster platform. VetsterRx is a feature within our service that enables veterinarians to offer prescription and non-prescription medications, diets, and pet-related products to pet owners as part of their virtual experience. Think of VetsterRx like the client’s shopping cart.

Key benefits for clients include: treatment options for their pet, timely delivery of medications, and convenient access to care no matter their location.  Additionally, items entered in VetsterRx are maintained in the medical record’s prescription history. VetsterRx is also a great way to connect pet owners with therapeutic diets and other nutritional recommendations.

VetsterRx is where veterinarians enter prescription and OTC medications, supplements, special diets, and diagnostic tests for their clients. VetsterRx isn’t just for prescriptions - it’s for everything the veterinarian wants to connect the client with, from amoxicillin to Zylkene.

Depending on the location of the veterinarian and client, VetsterRx has different features and functionality:

• United States - In the US, VetsterRx fulfilled by PetMedsⓇ shows up automatically near the bottom of the appointment screen. Smart product suggestions appear based on the client’s chief complaint as well as a search window for finding anything else needed. Alternatively, veterinarians may select a free form pad to record OTC and prescription recommendations for easy reference when phoning the script in to the client’s preferred pharmacy. Through our partnership with MySimplePetLab, at-home fecal diagnostic kits are also available in VetsterRx.
• Canada - In Canada, VetsterRx provides only the freeform pad. Pet owners can fulfill their freeform prescription at most local human pharmacies like Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall in addition to compounding pharmacies, and online pet pharmacies. Don’t forget the freeform pad can also be used for OTC items, such as feline laxatives or a canine head collar.
• United Kingdom - Freeform prescriptions can be called in to local clinics, pet pharmacies and some human pharmacies.

Since VetsterRx fulfilled by PetMedsⓇ is the default for US vets, the freeform pad is found by clicking the three dots to open the VetsterRx options then selecting “add a freeform Rx”. The freeform pad is found near the bottom of the appointment screen for veterinarians in the US and Canada. Follow the prompts and be sure to enter all the necessary information correctly so the pharmacy can get the medication to the client in a timely manner. The fastest way to connect clients to the medications entered on the freeform pad is to ask them where they’d like to have the script called in during the appointment and take care of that immediately afterwards.

VetsterRx allows American veterinarians to easily search select PetMedsⓇ inventory items for both prescription medications and OTC products. Product and medication suggestions based on the client’s chief complaint also appear.

Select the desired item(s) and enter the quantity, dosing, refill, and other required information. Use the search field for items that don’t appear in the suggestions.

Once complete, the client will be able to purchase the medication directly within their Vetster account. The prescription is then fulfilled by PetMedsⓇ and shipped directly to the customer. The same process applies to OTC items.

The added convenience of online purchasing and direct-to-home shipping provides an excellent client experience, and fulfillment by PetMedsⓇ is the least time-consuming option for veterinarians, so use VetsterRx fulfilled by PetMedsⓇ at every opportunity.

Whether the freeform pad or fulfillment by PetMedsⓇ is used, VetsterRx makes it easy to capture and keep a history of all prescriptions provided to the pet owner within the Vetster platform. The platform displays all previous entries (both Rx and OTC) for easy viewing on each appointment page, providing a concise medication history. Prescriptions and OTC items entered elsewhere, such as in the “Plan” section of the DAP template of the medical record will not appear in treatment summary reports, so all product recommendations (both Rx and OTC) should be created within VetsterRx.
