About Vet

I started my career as a conservation mammalogist conducting research on African Wild Dogs in South Africa for several years. My research focused on progeny outcomes based on social hierarchies. From there my live took an interesting detour! Having planned on a brief hiatus from the often grueling work of field research, I took a temporary entry level position in NYC as a digital strategist at a large advertising firm. My experience with biostatistics and analytical tools such as SAAS translated well into the requirements of the position and it was something fun and new. That ‘temporary’ position ultimately resulted in 7 years in advertising, working at top communication strategy agencies across the country. But I knew I couldn’t leave the world of science permanently. In 2012 I decided to foray back into the world of biology and landed on veterinary medicine as a wonderful outlet for my analytical brain as well as my need for ‘get your hands dirty’ applied science. I attended UC Davis and subsequently completed a rotating internship with a heavy Emergency and Critical Care focus at a busy specialty veterinary hospital in Los Angeles, CA. I currently work at several trauma tier I (highest tier of critical cases) specialty vet hospitals across L.A. where I’m able to practice high quality ER medicine with some of the best veterinary specialists in the field. This truly is one of the most challenging and fulfilling jobs in the world!

This was our first experience using Vetster, and likely not our last. Dr. Sarah was fantastic. It’s nice to be able to speak with a veterinarian to get a better sense of what could possibly be happening, and what to look out for before you go and wait 7 hours for a walk-in appointment.

Dr. Alwen was completely professional, understood the situation immediately, suggested a variety of actions to help my cat's behavior problem, and was unusually patient with the fact that my computer microphone was not working. I could hear her but she couldn't hear me. She stayed with the appointment nonetheless, for which I am grateful.

As a pet owner in a new state we were concerned our dog had eaten something poisonous. The doctor already researched plant life in our area, thoroughly explained toxicity and what it would look like and provided other suggestions for us. Great experience - would highly recommend.
