About Vet

IF YOU ARE IN NEED OF A PRESCRIPTION PLEASE READ Veterinary practice acts are state specific and regulate what can qualify as a veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR). A VCPR is REQUIRED to prescribe medications legally. Currently, few states allow for a virtual visit to qualify as a VCPR to prescribe medication. Florida and Michigan do not allow legal prescribing of medications without first conducting an in-person physical exam. Hence, I cannot prescribe medications for your pet unless I have examined them in-person within the last 12 months. I am still able to address your concerns, triage, come up with differential diagnoses for your pet as well as recommend over-the-counter medications as needed. Virginia pet parents - I can prescribe medications except for controlled substances.

My name is Dr Jessica Columbus, you can call me Dr Jess. I was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (a Yooper!) I graduated from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine, and I have 20 years of experience as a veterinarian. After veterinary school I did a small animal internship where I gained valuable skills in emergency work, internal medicine, dermatology, surgery, and ultrasound. Most of my experience comes from 14 years as an associate in rural mixed animal private practice in the Upper Peninsula where I handled a wide variety of surgical and medical cases. I then spent three years doing house call medicine, bringing wellness services into the home of pet parents, and helping beloved pets cross the rainbow bridge in the comfort of their home. People generally think euthanasia is the toughest part of this job, but I feel honored when providing in home euthanasia service and I have great compassion and skill for helping pet parents navigate the decisions and procedures involved in end-of-life care. I am licensed in Michigan, Virginia, and Florida. I am currently working as a relief veterinarian as well as offering telemedicine services on Vetster.

I have a strong interest in integrative (also called “alternative”) medicine which includes things such as acupuncture, laser therapy, massage, and herbal medicine. I have a certification in Cannabis in Veterinary Medicine and I’m happy to discuss how these therapies can help your pet. I enjoy helping pet parents understand how nutrition, lifestyle, and behavior management can help prevent disease and improve both quality and quantity of life.

Outside of veterinary medicine I enjoy anything having to do with the outdoors such as hiking, camping, trail riding in my Jeep, and going to the beach. I have two children and I spend as much time with them as I can with them! I love to dance and have taught Zumba and cardio dance classes. I also have three precious fur babies, two cats named Nermie and Sunny Bun Bun, and a dachshund/English toy spaniel mix named Mickey.
