Upholding Professionalism and Ethics
A key part of delivering a great virtual appointment is maintaining professionalism in both your appearance and conduct during virtual appointments. Just as in-person consultations require careful attention to ethics and professional demeanor, your virtual practice on Vetster does also, and in a virtual space there are differences to be aware of.
Appearance matters
Even though you’re working from a virtual platform, the way you present yourself to clients is essential. A clean, professional appearance builds trust and shows that you take your role seriously, whether you're working from a clinic or home office. Dress appropriately, ensure your background is tidy, and minimize distractions to create a comfortable and professional setting for your clients. Audit your background for any personal items you do not wish to disclose.

Mind your words and actions
Start strong by being prepared and punctual. Virtual waiting rooms usually have fewer distractions than traditional clinics, so clients may perceive even a short delay as longer and more frustrating. Additionally, clients often expect they are paying for your dedicated time and attention in a virtual setting. Therefore, appointments that feel rushed or end too quickly may leave clients feeling they didn’t receive full value."
In a virtual space your communication style is critical. Take the time with your clients to address their concerns, ask open ended questions, coach the pet owners and add value to them by educating them on areas they may not be familiar with.
Ensure that your language remains respectful and professional at all times. Virtual consultations might feel more informal, but it’s important to maintain the same high standards as you would in a clinic setting. Choose your words carefully, and always keep the focus on providing clear, compassionate, and ethical care. Read more here:
A friendly reminder about the microphone
Be aware that at the end of an appointment, it takes a few seconds for the call to fully close after you exit. During this brief time, your microphone may still be live. Please be mindful of what you say and avoid discussing anything you want to keep private until the call has fully ended.
Ethical considerations in virtual care
Your responsibility as a veterinarian extends beyond your skill as a practitioner. Upholding professional ethics is critical, both in-person and online. Veterinarians are obligated to comply with clear codes of ethics, which emphasize professionalism, respect, and honesty in interactions with clients and colleagues. These codes remind us to always:
- Treat clients and their pets with dignity and care.
- Communicate respectfully and accurately.
- Avoid conflicts of interest and uphold the integrity of our profession.
You can find more on these codes by reviewing the CVMA’s Code of Ethics and the AVMA’s Principles of Veterinary Medical Ethics. Both serve as guiding documents to help ensure that veterinarians, whether practicing in person or virtually, maintain the highest standards of care.
Keeping it professional is key for success
Your virtual practice is an extension of your professional image. By presenting yourself thoughtfully, being mindful of your words, and adhering to ethical standards, you build trust with your clients and continue to uphold the integrity of the veterinary profession.
