Oak Grove Lake Park is not technically a dog park, but it is a very highly rated park in Chesapeake. This park has 65 acres of space with a mile-and-a-half-long path, as well as a large lake, making it a beautiful place to take your dog. The area is dog-friendly as long as your dog stays on a leash.
2. Woodstock Dog Park
Located on the far west side of Virginia Beach, this one-acre park is within driving range of Portsmouth, making for a great location for dog owners. It’s a fenced area for both large and small dogs to play, and as of April 2019, they eliminated all dog park pass fees and allowed all dogs and their owners to come to play. You’ll find benches, shade from the local trees, and a water fountain for dogs to play in, and the larger, 30-acre park surrounding it is a great spot to walk dogs on leash as well.
3. Chesapeake City Park Dog Park
Chesapeake City Park is situated in Chesapeake, but it’s close enough to Portsmouth for most dog owners to drive to. There are two different fenced-in dog parks in this city park, and one of them has a dedicated area for small dogs 25 pounds and under. Water fountains are available but are closed off during the winter. Additionally, dog owners must have a dog park membership to use the park, but memberships are available for those who live outside of Chesapeake.
4. Deep Creek Park
This 1.5-acre area offers one large area for all dogs, allowing everyone to play together. With a doggy drinking fountain, benches for owners, and dog waste bags available, it’s the perfect spot to bring your furry friends. Additionally, it’s just next to Destination Playground, which is ADA-accessible and designed to allow children with special needs to play alongside their peers. This is a great trip for the whole family. A dog park membership is required for this park.
5. Western Branch Dog Park
This .65-acre dog park is a small area where dogs can enjoy their time and humans can sit and watch. There are plenty of trees in the area, which means that there’s never a lack of shade. The 93-acre park surrounding the area is also quite large, and amenities include five multipurpose fields, pickleball courts, and a walking trail you can enjoy with your leashed dog. A dog park membership is required for this park.
