“Most importantly, I always make space for the client’s questions, so they feel heard and supported without the appointment feeling rushed.” —Dr. Shannon James

Please tell us about your journey in becoming a vet and how you got started.
I've been a veterinarian for over 10 years now, working primarily in relief in general practice. I always knew I wanted to work with animals, and veterinary medicine gave me the opportunity to combine science, problem-solving, and compassion. Over time, I realized I really enjoy the flexibility that relief work offers, which led me to build a career where I could choose when and where I practice. That flexibility eventually opened the door to telemedicine, which has become a really rewarding part of my work. I'm also a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, and being able to practice virtually allows me to be home more often so I can care for injured or orphaned wildlife. It’s a balance I never thought I could achieve earlier in my career, but now I have the best of both worlds.

What is your favorite tool or feature on Vetster and why?
I really appreciate the built-in medical records system and how seamlessly it integrates with each appointment. It keeps everything organized and easy to reference, which makes a big difference when you’re moving between multiple virtual cases. Having all the client communication, history, and records in one place really streamlines my workflow and helps ensure continuity of care.

What are your go-to tactics for keeping virtual appointments efficient without feeling rushed?
Preparation is key. I always review the appointment notes and patient history ahead of time so I can hit the ground running. I also make sure to set expectations at the beginning of each call; what I can do in a virtual setting, and what might require in-person care. That helps keep things focused. Most importantly, I always make space for the client’s questions, so they feel heard and supported without the appointment feeling rushed.

How do you prepare for a virtual appointment to make sure you’re set up for success?
I set up a quiet, well-lit space with minimal distractions, and I always make sure my tech is working; strong Wi-Fi, camera, microphone, etc. Before the appointment, I review the patient’s history and any notes the client submitted. If I have time, I’ll jot down a few potential differential diagnoses or questions I want to ask. Having a calm and focused environment makes a big difference in delivering care confidently and professionally.

Do you use templates, checklists, or other tools to streamline record-keeping or follow-ups?
Yes, I’ve created a few templates for common types of visits: skin issues, GI concerns, senior care, etc. This helps me stay consistent and efficient with my documentation. I also use checklists to make sure I’ve covered key topics during wellness consults or chronic care follow-ups. These tools not only save time but also ensure I’m not missing anything important, especially when working virtually where physical exams are limited.
