What is Hypertrophic Osteopathy?
Hypertrophic Osteopathy is a bone disease where new bone information appears in the limbs of a young growing dog. Although the exact mechanisms of the inflammation is poorly understood, it is thought to be an immune-mediated disorder. It is known to occur more commonly in large and giant breed dogs.
Symptoms of Hypertrophic Osteopathy in Dogs
Hypertrophic Osteopathy more commonly affects the long skeletal bones of young dogs, but lesions can also be found in the jaw, ribs, spine, shoulder blade and facial bones. Some of the symptoms a dog’s owner might notice include:
- Lethargy
- Lameness
- Weight loss
- Coughing
- Blood in urine
- Reluctance to move
- Pain with movement
Treatment of Hypertrophic Osteopathy in Dogs
Many cases of HOD will recover spontaneously without intervention. Other cases require medication to reduce/control inflammation and immune stimulation such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatories or steroid medications.
