Giardiasis is caused by infection with the protozoan Giardia. It lives in the intestinal tract of the bird after entering through the drinking water. It causes intensive itching and severe illness to your bird. Infected birds spread Giardia through their fecal matter and non-infected birds get infected through ingestion of contaminated water sources.
The disease often does not show symptoms or show mild symptoms. Symptoms to watch for include:
Metronidazole and ronidazole medications are mainly used to treat Giardiasis. Dimetridazole (Emtryl) is also known to be effective. It is important to use a water bottle instead of a water bowl to prevent re-infection. The bottle needs to be cleaned regularly and best to use water that has been boiled and cooled. Young or severely affected birds may die.
