Candidiasis in pet birds

Candidiasis is a common fungal disease that occurs in birds when the yeast Candida albicans infects the digestive tract. It is normal for your bird if the bird has a small amount of candida albicans. It causes problem when the number of yeast become excessive. Candidiasis can affect the respiratory tract, digestive tract, central nervous system and other organs. It can also affect the skin, feathers, eyes. Candidiasis is commonly seen in young birds, especially cockatiels.

Anti-fungal drugs are used for the treatment. The most commonly used anti-fungal drug for candidiasis in birds is Nystatin. There are also other common anti-fungal drugs including flucytosine, ketoconazole, fluconazole and itraconazole. Your vet will prescribe medications after diagnosing candidiasis in your pet bird. It is very important to follow your veterinarian's instructions carefully and give medications properly.
