Symptoms of parasites in Turtles

Different parasitic infections may affect turtles in different ways, symptoms to monitor for include:

  • Weight loss
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Passing undigested food

If you note any of these symptoms, then your turtle may have a parasitic infection, and a discussion with your veterinarian about your concerns is warranted.

Treatment of Parasites in Turtles

Several anti-parasitic medications are available and effective for the management of parasite infections in turtles including praziquantel and fenbendazole. Metronidazole is an antibiotic that is also often used to treat protozoal parasitic infections.  It is important to be aware that Ivermectin, a commonly used antiparasitic medication in veterinary medicine, should not be given to turtles as it is toxic to them and will cause death if used.
