About Vet

I have been practicing small animal (and some pocket pet, exotic, and wildlife) medicine for over 40 years and have owned 2 different vet clinics, one in St Thomas, ON and the other on Manitoulin Island in Mindemoya, ON. I sold my Mindemoya practice several years ago and have been doing locums (fill in work) part time at other veterinary clinics all over Ontario since then. I have worked with many wonderful rescue groups over the years and shelter medicine remains close to my heart.

I have also enjoyed working with Vetster for about 2 years now. I get a great deal of job satisfaction practicing in this new field of Veterinary Telemedicine. It has saddened me to see so many people and their sick pets turned away from vet clinics all over Ontario that were just too busy and overworked to see them due to the general shortage of vets and the rapid growth of the pet population.

With Ontario Provincial regulations now allowing licensed veterinarians to examine, diagnose, and prescribe medication for pets via telemedicine, I can provide care for the many beloved pets that have been "falling between the cracks" and unable to get the veterinary care they need in a timely fashion. Being able to practice from home now also gives me more time to work on my permaculture farm while still working as a vet which I love so much.

I have also been an herbalist for over 30 years and have long felt that a combination of mainstream conventional veterinary medicine and safe, natural remedies offers the best of both those worlds to my patients. I am a big believer in preventative medicine such as good nutrition, maintenence of a healthy gut ecosystem, exercise, proper weight maintenance, parasite management, good dental hygiene and of course LOTS of love.

During my veterinary career I have always lived in small towns that do not have access to nearby veterinary emergency clinics, so I have been on call for after hours service for most of my adult life. This has given me decades of experience helping worried pet owners determine if their beloved fur baby's problem is a true emergency and needs to be seen at an in person vet clinic immediately, or if there might be things they can do at home to help or even fix the situation. I can, if indicated, also prescribe medication that can be picked up at the client's local human pharmacy within an hour or so of their Vetster appointment with me.

I am available to discuss a wide variety of pet health issues, including --

skin problems- rashes, seborrhea, dry skin

chronic allergies - prescription medication, natural dietary supplements and herbs, special diets

digestive issues such as diarrhea and maintenance of a healthy microbiome

palliative care of terminal patients - compassionate pain management, special nutritional needs, when is it "time"

behavior problems, separation anxiety, aggression -- training, medication ( prescription and herbal), diet, exercise ( how to train your dog to use a tread mill at home)

physiotherapy ---post op recovery from knee surgery, arthritis management

weight loss strategies

heart failure -- medication, dietary supplements, weight management

preparing homemade diets, including raw diets and treats

dental hygiene --practical preventative teeth care to do at home

urinary tract problems -- managing chronic kidney failure, inappropriate urination in the house, urinary tract infections

diabetes management -- medication, monitoring, diet , weight loss

and many more topics

Also available-- A second opinion on your pet's care --please send all available veterinary records to Vetster for me to review at least 1 hour before our scheduled appointment.

I look forward to meeting and helping many more patients and their human caretakers on Vetster.
